In the western GTA, including Mississauga, Oakville, Burlington, and Milton, much of that soil is known as Halton Till. It was deposited by glaciers thousands of years ago and is made up of fine particles of clay, silt, and stone.
Those tiny clay particles fit tightly together, leaving very little space for air and water to move through the soil. That's why clay stays wet longer after rain, becomes sticky when worked in spring, and often dries into hard clumps during hot summer weather.
While that can make gardening more challenging, clay also has a major advantage. Unlike sandy soils that dry out quickly and lose nutrients, clay holds moisture and valuable nutrients remarkably well. With the right planting techniques and plant selection, clay soil can support healthy, long-lived gardens.
Common Challenges of Gardening in Clay Soil

The hole fills with water faster than it can drain away, leaving the roots sitting in saturated conditions. Without enough oxygen, roots struggle to establish and may eventually rot.
Instead of creating a pocket of different soil, plant directly into the native clay and improve the entire garden bed over time by adding organic matter to the surface. This encourages stronger root growth and creates healthier soil throughout the planting area, not just around one plant.
Planting Trees and Shrubs in Clay Soil
Plant High, Not Deep
When planting trees, shrubs, or large perennials in clay, depth matters.
Rather than digging a deep hole, dig one that's two to three times wider than the root ball but only as deep as necessary. The top of the root ball should sit slightly above the surrounding soil level.
This simple adjustment helps keep the root crown above the wettest part of the soil, allowing oxygen to reach the roots while excess water drains away more easily.
Finish by gently sloping the surrounding soil up to the root ball and applying two to three inches of mulch, keeping it a few inches away from stems and trunks.
How to Amend and Improve Clay Soil
Improve the Whole Bed, Not Just One Hole
Healthy clay soil improves gradually.
Instead of mixing compost into a single planting hole, improve the entire garden bed over time. Each spring, top-dress your garden beds with a quality garden soil or compost blend available at your local garden centre.
Earthworms and other beneficial soil organisms gradually pull this material into the clay, improving soil structure, increasing air pockets, and making it easier for roots to grow. It takes time, but small, consistent improvements each year create healthier soil than trying to replace the clay all at once.
Should I Add Sand?
Adding sand to heavy clay is one of the most common gardening myths. Unless you're adding very large quantities, and using the right kind of sand, the sand and clay can combine into a dense, concrete-like mixture that's even harder for roots to penetrate. Organic matter is a much more effective way to improve clay soil over the long term.
What About Gypsum?
Gypsum is sometimes recommended for clay soils because it can help improve soil structure under certain conditions. But, for most home gardens, you'll see better long-term results by adding organic matter regularly and choosing plants that are well suited to clay soil.

Sometimes clay gets blamed for problems that are actually caused by poor drainage.
If water consistently pools near your foundation, large sections of your yard remain saturated for days after rainfall, or multiple plants continue to fail despite proper planting, the issue may be related to grading, downspouts, or drainage rather than the soil itself.
Addressing those underlying issues before planting often leads to much better long-term results.
